If you're not actively building your confidence, more than likely you are allowing it to reduce, by inertia. A devastating thought!
When was the last time you said to yourself? "I'll have a go. It doesn't matter if I make a mistake."
Confidence is like muscle, the more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes.
The opposite is also true. Think about it for a minute. The less you exercise your muscles, the more they reduce in size and strength. In the same way, the less you risk; the less you are prepared to have a go; the more you reduce your confidence.
Opportunities to exercise your confidence muscles arise daily, whether you're in a shop looking for good service, you need to say no to more work, you want to handle your children better or make a presentation to a group.
Why not get started now? Remember it's no good exercising in your head, you must experience what's it's like to take risks, even tiny ones. I suggest you pick one tool at a time and work with it over a month until you have really got to grips with it and it's almost second nature.
It helps too to get support from support from friends and family or a coach.
Five Ways to Build Confidence
- Say no. (To whatever it is you don't want to do, or accept.)
- Collect rejections. (Keep putting yourself out there and asking for what you want, e.g. higher salary, more time off, a discount on purchases, someone else to do the dishes, the more no's you get, the less it bothers you).
- Change your mind twice a day - it's OK.
- Think about what you want. Start it. Finish it. Acknowledge your achievement. (Pick something simple to begin with. Feel what it's like to achieve it.)
- Share your opinion when in company - bring yourself out into the open.
Enjoy the confidence you will gain!
